High Quality Instructional Materials

With support from the Gates Foundation, CMC is providing tools and guidance to help California educators select and implement high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) in mathematics.

These resources are designed to help teachers and administrators:

  • Identify the key features of effective mathematics materials

  • Select curricula that meet the diverse needs of students

  • Access professional learning aligned with those materials

Our goal is to build a shared understanding of what “high-quality” means—empowering educators to strengthen mathematics instruction for every student.

  • The California Mathematics Council wants you to share the Pre-K and K–12 Math at Home resources with parents, guardians, and families!

A great place for parents to start supporting their children’s mathematics learning is Math at Home, short parent guides to mathematics education. These booklets were written expressly for parents and guardians of Pre-K and K-12th grade children. Each booklet contains straight-forward information, practical suggestions, and resources for families who wish to better understand the importance of mathematics and the role they can play in helping children learn this critical subject. The Math at Home parent guides to mathematics education are available in editions for Pre-K or K–12 in either English or Spanish. CMC hopes you will use these tools in your work with English and Spanish speaking parents so they might in turn work with their children to help them to enjoy, appreciate, and understand mathematics.

The California Mathematics Council grants permission to share these files with parents, guardians, and educators—all other uses require expressed permission.

  • Not only students are learners; parents must be learners too! Here you will find articles on many topics in mathematics education that provide information and insights into how students learn from pre-school through high school, and the role that parents and families can play in a child’s success in this important subject.

  • Mathematics can be hard, but it can be fun and exciting too! On this page you will find activities in many areas of mathematics that provide students with opportunities to learn, and give them insights into how mathematics works. Students from pre-school through high school need to see the fun side of math and families can play a wonderful role in helping children enjoy doing math.

  • Mathematics education has evolved significantly, and families play a crucial role in helping students succeed. Family Math is designed to support parents and guardians by sharing current approaches to math instruction and offering tools to engage with their children’s learning. Explore our guidelines and resources to bring a meaningful Family Math event to your school or community.

Family/Community Engagement

Parents, guardians, and families play an essential role in students’ success in mathematics—every bit as important as teachers! A parent’s experiences, attitudes, and understandings (or misunderstandings!) about math can strongly shape a child’s confidence and perspective.

The Family/Community Engagement section is designed to help parents, guardians, and families support students’ mathematical learning—and to help teachers build stronger connections with families. Here, you’ll find downloadable articles and activities that offer practical guidance and information for families and educators of children from preschool through high school.
