The California Mathematics Council (CMC) is proud to recognize excellence, support innovation, and invest in the future of mathematics education. ​

Whether you’re recognizing a student, honoring a colleague, or seeking funding for classroom projects or math events, these opportunities highlight CMC’s commitment to advancing mathematics education across California.

Student Awards

Celebrate outstanding student achievement with the High School Student Recognition Award.

Teacher and Student

Student Awards

High School Student Recognition Award

Recognizes high school students who demonstrate creativity, interest, achievement, or excellence in mathematics.
Eligibility: Any student; not limited to seniors.
Deadline: Rolling; schools may award at any time.

Recognition Awards

Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST)

The nation’s highest commendation for K–12 math and science teachers, including a $10,000 NSF grant and a trip to Washington, D.C.
Eligibility: K–12 math and science teachers (secondary apply in odd years, elementary in even years); nomination required.
Deadline: Applications due May 1 each year.

George Polya Memorial Award

Honors K–12 math teachers for sustained excellence and active participation in CMC.
Eligibility: K–12 teachers involved in CMC or affiliates.
Deadline: Nominations accepted annually.

Edward Begle Memorial Award

Recognizes educators—professors, administrators, supervisors—who have demonstrated long-term leadership and support of CMC and mathematics education.
Eligibility: Open to individuals involved in advancing math education.
Deadline: Nominations accepted annually.

Walter Denham Memorial Award

Celebrates individuals who have championed mathematics education through leadership and advocacy at state or national levels.
Eligibility: Open; recipient does not need to be a CMC member or educator.
Deadline: Nominations accepted annually.

Teacher Grants

Gretchen Muller Coaching Grant

Supports up to three teacher leaders or instructional coaches (one per section) to attend a CMC conference, covering up to $650 in expenses.
Eligibility: Current CMC member; instructional coach or teacher leader providing PD.
Deadlines: June 15 (South), September 15 (North), December 15 (Central).

Lurie Center Grant

Provides three teachers of color (one per section) up to $500 for conference costs, plus complimentary registration and CMC membership.
Eligibility: K–14 teacher of color; teaching assignment includes mathematics; current CMC member.
Deadlines: June 15 (South), September 15 (North), December 15 (Central).

Mike Contino Memorial Grant

Funds up to $2,000 for college or university faculty to bring groups of pre-service math teachers to a CMC conference.
Eligibility: University or college professor; current CMC member.
Deadline: September 1 (all sections).

Student Activities Trust Fund

Student Activities Trust Fund

Provides financial support for organized student math events such as Math Field Days, contests, and Olympiads; covers up to 50% of activity costs.
Eligibility: Current CMC members; activity must focus on mathematics.
Deadline: September 25 each year; late applications considered if funds remain.
