PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
A Message from CMC President,
Ma Bernadette Andres-Salgarino, Ed.D., NBCT
April 2025

At the recent State Board meeting, the California Mathematics Council formally adopted an updated mission statement that reflects both our values and our vision for the future.
Mission Statement: The California Mathematics Council believes that each and every student has the capacity to become mathematically competent and confident when provided with an equitable, rigorous, and challenging mathematical program supported by high expectations.
The California Mathematics Council is committed to:
-
Providing and promoting professional activities and resources that will ensure continual improvement towards excellence in the teaching and learning of mathematics for each and every student;
-
Communicating with educators, parents, the public, and legislative bodies concerning issues related to teaching rigorous, relevant, and challenging mathematics; and
-
Increasing the diversity of membership of the California Mathematics Council and the diversity of leadership in mathematics education at the local, state, and national levels.
At its core, the new mission reaffirms what we have always believed: each and every student has the capacity to become mathematically competent and confident when given access to equitable, rigorous, and high-expectation learning environments.
However, CMC’s mission is more than a statement; it is a call to action.
CMC is committed to providing meaningful resources and professional learning that move us all toward excellence in mathematics teaching and learning. We are equally committed to clear, open communication with educators, families, policymakers, and the broader public about what equitable, high-quality, relevant, and challenging mathematics education really looks like.
We are also working intentionally to expand the diversity of our membership and leadership because representation matters. Inclusive leadership creates stronger, more effective solutions and makes space for all voices in shaping the future of mathematics education.
Now more than ever, CMC is unwavering in its commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. These are not just words we say—they guide every decision, every initiative, and every conversation.
-
Equity ensures that each and every student has the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.
-
Diversity is bringing a wide range of perspectives and experiences to the table.
-
Inclusion means every person in our community feels seen, respected, and empowered to contribute.

To strengthen our work ahead, we are calling on CMC members to step up and lead. We invite you to nominate yourself or someone you know for this year’s elections. We are looking for committed, passionate individuals ready to help drive our mission forward.
CMC is an incredible organization powered by incredible people. People who care deeply about students. People who believe in the joy of learning. People who are fighting for mathematics experiences that are equitable, rigorous, relevant, and empowering.
If that sounds like you, we want you with us!
In partnership,
Dr. Ma Bernadette Andres-Salgarino, NBCT
